Back to School Celebration
Sat, August 11 @ 11:00 am - 2:00 pm
For the second year, Livermore Valley Performing Arts Center will host students and their families at a Back-to-School Celebration featuring opportunities to experience and explore art, music and science at the Bankhead Theater. To be held on August 11, the last Saturday before the new school years starts, the event will include an immersive planetarium experience, live music performances, storytime with local childrens’ book authors, and hands-on science, arts and crafts activities. The event is offered in partnership with Top Science of Tri-Valley, LARPD, and bitsbytesandpixels.
A planetarium tent will be set up by Top Science, a volunteer organization dedicated to building student interest in science and technology through multi-level support of K-12 teachers. Narrated by Top Science’s experienced scientists and engineers, visitors will enjoy beautiful planetary projections inside the tent. Admission for the planetarium show, which will run repeatedly during the event, is free with first-come-first-served seating. Van De Graaff, rocks, minerals, and other science exhibits will also be on display.
Live music will be offered throughout the event including the steel drum magic of musician/educator Shawn Thwaites, whose appealing style intertwines jazz, hip-hop, funk, calypso, reggae and more. Teens who completed the recent Derik Nelson & Family songwriting workshop will return with a showcase of the songs they wrote. Also performing will be young musicians from Superviolins, a group started by local college students Sumedh and Srivishnu Vedanthi, who teach and lead the group as volunteers.
Storytime will be offered by local authors Melanie Butler (You are Special, You are Loved), Cherie Moore (Once Upon a Seed) and Rick and Ryan Goldsberry (Floater.) Rock painting, a bookmark craft project, face painting and more will keep attendees of all ages engaged throughout the free event. Food will be for sale in the concessions area.
