Bankhead Presents: Mayumana “Currents”
Driven by a deep love for percussion and music, founders Elyon Nuphar and Boaz Berman created Mayumana in 1996, drawing gifted performers from around the world. Their diverse talents, contrasting backgrounds and superlative technique live out the company’s name, which is derived from the Hebrew word for skill. The performers’ creativity is sparked by a shared passion for rhythm and movement, fueled by a unique sense of humor and playful mischief.
“Currents” was inspired by the historical Battle of Currents between Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla on their quest to find energy sources for the world. Drawing on specially-designed musical instruments, video projections, lights and visual effects, two troops represent the essence of light and electricity, expressed in different esthetic and artistic approaches. Together they bring to the stage an energy that is both inexhaustible and infectious, engaging audiences of all ages in this spectacular show.
“The perfect escape from the outside world … a wonderful performance of light and sound, dance and song, perfect for any age.” — Brooklyn Daily Eagle
“Smartly choreographed to be energetic rather than exhausting … toe tapping without being ear splitting, and the attitude hip yet free of snark.“ – The New York Times
